What does “energy healing” mean?

After talking with many of my clients, I realized just how little we know about energy and how our energy works. There is a lot of information out there, but at the same time, a lot of misconceptions about what energy healing means and how we can embrace it in our lives for better well-being, so I decided to take some time to share about energy. Through this article I hope you can find more clarity and understanding. To start, we need to understand… what exactly is “energy”?

What is energy?

Everything in existence is energy, from a single blood cell to an entire galaxy.  Everything is connected and created from the same source of energy. Consider the Big Bang theory: everything condensed until a sound created an explosion of creation, birthing all in existence from the same original source. Everything is in a constant state of giving and receiving energy, taking and providing information, transmitting and interacting in constant movement, ebb and flow. 

Energy transmits information through frequency, vibrating along a spectrum of light and love to dark and fear. Perhaps you have heard about the Law of Attraction; you attract to you that which vibrates at the same frequency you are emitting. Have you ever had one of those days where you woke up on the wrong side of the bed and the entire day was a demonstration of Murphy’s law, everything that could go wrong does go wrong? What you encounter in every day situations is a good reflection of what vibration and energy you are emitting to the world.

We also have energy points or vortex wheels called chakras along our body which correspond to major organs and are associated with our emotional and physical health. If chakras become misaligned, blocked, too open, or improperly functioning for a prolonged period, damage will manifest in the physical. For example, if you are feeling negative emotions, isolated, or lacking in creativity and drive, you may be experiencing a chakra imbalance. Blockages can occur from physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, or karmic origins. For instance, a physical injury can cause imbalances in the chakras and the energy body, or consistent negative thought patterns can manifest in a blockage limiting the natural flow of an energy point.

The only way we can change our lives is to change our energy — to change the electromagnetic field we are constantly broadcasting. In other words, to change our state of being, we have to change how we think and how we feel.

Why is energy work important?

We are living in unprecedented times where we are constantly bombarded with information causing sensory overload and mental pandemonium. Maintaining clarity of mind and inner peace has become more of a challenge than ever before. We need to constantly work to restore balance and harmony within so as to successfully navigate and stay afloat of the external chaos and challenges we encounter in everyday life.

Energy healing will bring positive changes in the physical - both in the body and in your life - however, it is important to know that healing happens in layers and you will need to be an active participant of the changes that you want to see in your life; these changes take time to manifest from energy to physical although miracles are not to be discounted.

Energy healing is not to be sought out as a replacement for standard health and wellness care, it is to be used as a means of supplemental and enhanced healing. However, it is important to understand the inherent connection between mind, body, and spirit. An illness or disease in our physical body is a manifestation of an imbalance in our subtle bodies. Prolonged emotional suppression or unresolved mental traumas create physical ailments as they cause blockages and imbalances in the body’s energy field. The goal of an energy healing is not necessarily to bring about immediate change to symptoms or conditions but rather to target the underlying imbalances, the root causes which created the unhealthy state in the body. 



What are some types of energy healing?

There are many holistic health treatments and alternative therapies that focus on energy to bring about healing. Listed below are some of the most widely known and practiced forms of energy work:

  • Reiki: a centuries old Japanese alternative therapy which employs various hand techniques and symbols to channel universal life force energy into the body to activate healing.

  • Crystal Healings: crystals each have their own unique properties and gifts in how they can help us energetically. They are capable of storing energy to be activated and accessed during healings and meditations. Healings using crystals access these properties and energies to recharge chakras and other energy points.

  • Sound & Color: everything is energy existing through vibrations; sounds and colors can be utilized to affect the vibrations in one’s energy field for healing, unblocking and upliftment.

  • Aromatherapy: plants and herbs can be incredibly medicinal, even through scent they have the ability to shift one’s energy. Many massage therapists incorporate herbal and floral oils diffused into the air and diluted for topical use to enhance the healing of a massage. Other healers use aromatherapy to activate chakras according to the corresponding aromas. 

  • Acupuncture: a traditional Chinese therapy involving the insertion of fine needles into various energy points on the body to alleviate pain and other ailments. 

  • Lotus & Trance Healing: similar to reiki this method uses hand movements and placement along the body to break up energy blockages and restore natural flow of energy throughout the subtle energy bodies and chakra system.  

What can you do in everyday life to move and heal your own energy?

Awareness is key and the first step towards living a more wholesome, holistic life that encompasses all aspects of spiritual health and well-being. Have reminders throughout the day to check back in with yourself, to remember who you truly are, that everything is energy and you have the power to affect, navigate, and alter the energies you experience and encounter. Having hourly alerts on your phone to help you recall you are not alone and to keep perspective helps you to take a step back from your daily life and the challenges you face so you can re-center and remember you are a powerful being with the ability to create your life.

One of the most important tools, in my personal opinion and experience, for self-healing and maintaining a balanced flow of energy is Meditation. Chanting and tones are powerful when it comes to clearing and moving energy. For now, simple meditations of five minutes a day can be an enormous aid. Yoga and qigong are other forms of flowing energy within oneself for health benefits. Exercise restores health not only to the physical body but to the energetic body as well. When you find yourself encountering one too many challenges during that wrong-side-of-the-bed kind of day, a walk or jog can help to physically move energy through and out of you.

An easy way to interact with this energetic life force of all that exists is to be aware, not only of its existence, but of our thoughts and emotions. What we think and feel is how we alter the energy within us as well as interact with external forces. Life can be so simple if we allow it to be. We are just energy.
